“As I’ve gotten older, my eyes have changed.”
Korea Expressway Corporation’s veteran middle blocker Jeong Dae-yeong (42) is a living legend in the V-League. He is 43 years old in Korean age, but when he sees Jung Dae-young standing on the court, he can’t help but admire. With his unwavering skills and fighting spirit, he is adding great strength to the road construction ranking fight.
Chung Dae-young started in all 23 games played by the team this season and is recording 167 points, 36.36% fast break success rate, and 0.728 blocks per set.
Also notable is the blocking. Daeyoung Chung is currently ranked third in blocking, following Suji Han at GS Caltex and Hyojin Yang at Hyundai E&C. 0.728 per set is the best record since 0.762 recorded in the 2005 V-League inaugural season. Jung Dae-young, the first MVP of the V-League and the first block queen, is once again aiming for the position of blocking queen after 18 years. There are only two players who have exceeded 1,000 blocks in the V-League women’s division. Yang Hyo-jin with 1,420 and Jeong Dae-young with 1,168.
Jeong Dae-young, whom she met after the Hyundai E&C match held at the Gimcheon Indoor Gymnasium on the 24th, said, “Her greed for attack has been abandoned. She talks a lot with the coach (Kim Jong-min) about what I can do on this team. The coach says that the team can gain more strength only when I block in a good direction. So I tend to pay a lot of attention.”
He continued, “I think my record is getting better as I pay more attention to blocking. As I got older, my eyes changed. The instant judgment ability has become faster,” he smiled.
Currently, the women’s blocking rankings are going up and down. Han Su-ji, Yang Hyo-jin, and Jeong Dae-young are in the top three, but teammate Bae Yuna and IBK Industrial Bank Kim Suji are also aiming for the top spot. Jung Dae-young said, “I sometimes look at the leaderboard, but I don’t look at it often. She gets stressed out every time she sees it,” she laughed. Then she said, “If there are days when I don’t catch blocking, I just think that I need to catch more next time. I don’t look at the records very well,” she said.
On the 24th at the Hyundai Engineering & Construction Exhibition, Jeong Dae-young shone. He scored 13 points, including two blocking-serves. In particular, in the second set, she blocked Hwang Hyo-jin’s attack in 0-0 and Hwang Min-kyung’s 7-6, and then put in a target serve against Hwang Min-kyung and Jeong Ji-yoon in 11-9, leading to consecutive serve scores. She also scored in the 4th set at 7-5, which made her the 3rd all-time 5,500 score in the V-League.
Jeong Dae-young said, “She has never scored more than 10 points this season, so I thought she could do it in the next game. It’s good to break her record,” he said. “Recently (Park) Jung-ah broke the 5,000 mark. I’m in my early 30’s now. I think you are more eloquent than me. Since she is in her early 30s, she might be able to score 6,000 or 7,000 points,” she laughed.
Lastly, Daeyoung Jeong said, “There are few middle-aged players on our team. As a result, there is a difference in skill. But all the young players on our team are good players. I believe that after 2-3 years, I will become a better player.”
