Korean Women’s Professional Golf (KLPGA) Tour ‘rookie long hitter’ Bang Shin-sil, 19, was cautious about her chances of winning for the third time in as many months.
Bang carded five birdies and two bogeys for a 3-under 69 on the second day of the KLPGA Tour’s 11th E1 Charity Open ($900,000) at Seongmunan Country Club (par-72, 6,602 yards) in Wonju, Gangwon Province on Sunday.
With a two-day total of 7-under par 137, Bang is tied for the lead with Park Ji-young and Kim Hee-ji.
Tour rookie Bang has been in contention for the title twice, finishing fourth at the KLPGA Championship in late April and third at the NH Investment & Securities Ladies Championship two weeks ago, but her dreams of a first regular tour victory will have to wait.
“In the first half, I made some mistakes off the tee and couldn’t keep the fairway,” Bang said in an interview after the second round, “but in the second half, my putter fell well and I was able to cut my stroke count a little bit.”
Starting on the 10th hole (par-4), Bang made a 10-meter birdie putt on the 1st hole (par-4) and birdied the 2nd hole (par-4) to build momentum with three consecutive birdies, but missed a 40-centimeter par putt on the 3rd hole (par-4).
“Then it started to rain and I lost my concentration, which was disappointing,” Bang said.
Heading into his third tournament in as many months, Bang appeared to be worried about the pressure of winning, saying, “I’m not thinking about winning,” and “I’ll do my best until the end.”
