‘Messi 496 goals’ Ronaldo reaches record… PSG celebrate 11th title in a row

Lionel Messi of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the French professional soccer Ligue 1 has scored the most goals in the history of Europe’s top five leagues. The team won its second straight regular season title and 11th overall.

PSG drew 1-1 with Strasbourg in the 37th round of the 2022-2023 Ligue 1 at the Stade de la Meno in Strasbourg, France, on Aug. 28 (KST) after Messi opened the scoring in the 14th minute, but Kevin Gameiro equalized in the 34th minute.

The draw leaves leaders PSG with 85 points, four points clear of second-placed Reims (81 points) with one game to go before the end of the regular season, clinching the title regardless of the final result. Defending champions PSG won their second consecutive Ligue 1 title and a record 11th overall, surpassing Saint-Etienne (10).

After a scoreless first half, Messi rattled the Strasbourg net with a left-footed shot from the left side of the goal area after latching onto a pass from Kylian Mbappe.

With the goal, Messi became the all-time leading goalscorer in Europe’s five major leagues (England, Spain, Germany, Italy, and France) with 496 career goals (474 in La Liga and 22 in Ligue 1), surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo (Alnasr-495) with 495 (103 in EPL, 311 in La Liga, and 81 in Serie A).
