Major League Baseball hopeful Jun-seok Shim, 19, had a successful professional debut.
Jun-seok Shim of the Pittsburgh Pirates’ minor league affiliate, the FCL Pirates, pitched a four-inning, eight-strikeout complete game against the Rookie League FCL Orioles at the Pirates City Complex in Florida on Monday (July 11).
Shim got off to a fresh start, retiring the first three batters he faced. In the top of the second, he struck out two more batters to retire the side. He didn’t allow a single base runner until the fourth inning to complete his American debut. He had some help from the field. He was also fortunate to have a hit batted into a fly out with the help of the infield. According to local media outlet Fireball Prospects, Shim threw his fastball between 94 and 97 miles per hour (about 151 and 156 kilometers per hour) on the day.
Shim, who has been recognized as a 메이저놀이터 hard-throwing pitcher since he was a student at Duksugo High School, opted to come to the United States instead of participating in the KBO’s 2023 First-Year Player Draft. In January of this year, he signed with Pittsburgh for $750,000 (approximately KRW 960,000) and jumped into his dream team. According to Pirates Prospects, he suffered a minor ankle injury in April, but recovered to make his professional debut today. Now that he has taken the first step, there are many hurdles to overcome before he can reach the biggest stage.
