Freshman Ahn Ji-won (16), who was named MVP of the tournament and led Busan High School to its first-ever Golden Lion title, revealed her dream of becoming a two-hitter.
Busan High School won its first Golden Lion title with a 12-3 victory over Sunlin Internet High School in the final game of the 77th Golden Lion National High School Baseball Tournament and Weekend League King of the Weekend at Mokdong Stadium in Seoul on April 29.
Leading the team to victory was Ahn Ji-won, who is only a freshman but has been playing as a starter. She started in right field at No. 2 and went 4-for-4 with three doubles, three RBIs, and one run scored. She finished the tournament with a 5-for-6 record (18-for-10), nine RBI, nine runs scored, one stolen base, and a 1.322 OPS in six games, earning Most Valuable Player, Most Valuable Hitter, and Most RBI honors.
In a postgame interview, Busan head coach Park Kye-won said, “She did an amazing job. Ahn Ji-won actually enrolled as a pitcher. She still wants to be a pitcher. However, the second and third year pitchers are thick, so I suggested that she try hitting for a year to get a chance to play. She readily accepted, and that’s how we got the big break today,” he laughed.
Ahn Ji-won made it clear that she wants to pursue a two-hitting career from next year. “Koo Jong throws a fastball, slider, and curveball. My fastball reached 139km/h and 140km/h in middle school. Right now, I don’t pitch at all and focus on hitting. But from the second grade, I want to pitch,” he said.
