Brazil loses…2-3 shocker to Israel in U20 World Cup quarterfinals

Brazil, the heavy favorite, is out. Israel, a country on the fringes of world soccer, has been dealt an unexpected blow.

Israel pulled off an incredible come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Brazil in extra time in the quarterfinals of the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup in San Juan, Argentina, on Thursday. After conceding a late goal, Israel equalized to send the match into extra time, then scored two goals in quick succession to complete the miracle.

Brazil lost 2-3 to Italy in the group stage, but went 2-1 to reach the round of 16, where they thrashed Tunisia 4-1 to reach the quarterfinals. With Brazil always getting stronger as the group stage progresses, most expected them to breeze through the quarterfinals.

Israel, on the other hand, made it to the round of 16 the hard way with a 1-1 draw against Japan in their final group game and a 1-0 win over Uzbekistan to join them in the quarterfinals.

The matchup between the two teams was expected to be a victory for the fresh-faced Brazilians, but the reality was different.

The Israelis did a good job of containing the Brazilian offense, which featured some spectacular individual performances, throughout the first half. In the 11th minute of the second half, Brazil’s Leonardo took the lead with a left-footed mid-range shot. But just four minutes later, a powerful header from Carlisle equalized the score. No further goals were scored and the match went into overtime.메이저놀이터

At the start of extra time, Brazil’s Nascimento took the lead after a brilliant pass in the box. Just two minutes later, Sibley tied the game again after a sharp cross went through the Brazilian defense and GK. In the first minute of overtime, Israel’s Turgeman scored the game-winning goal after an Israeli shot was deflected, beating two Brazilian defenders in the process to make it 3-2. Israel was awarded a PK late in the extra period, but was unable to capitalize.
