An official from Gangwon FC in the K League 1, a professional football club that uses this stadium as its home, said, “The stadium was not directly damaged by the forest fire, but we know that the forest fire affected nearby areas.”

A forest fire broke out at 8:22 am on that day, causing enormous damage to forests, houses, and pensions in the Gangneung area until the afternoon.

In eight hours until 4:30 pm when the main fire was extinguished, 379 hectares of forest, 530 times the area of a soccer field (0.714 hectares), turned to ashes.

A total of 101 facilities, including 59 houses, 34 pensions, 3 hotels, 2 shopping malls, 1 vehicle, 1 church facility, and 1 cultural property, were burned down or partially burned.

While a man in his 80s was found dead in a house in Anhyeon-dong, one of the residents suffered second-degree burns while evacuating, and two firefighters suffered second-degree burns to the chest.

According to the forest authorities, the cause of this forest fire is estimated to be a ‘short circuit’ caused by strong winds.

The Korea Forest Service believes that a tree was broken by strong winds and shorted the power line, resulting in an electric spark that caused a forest fire.
